The village shaman Ikumi holds a consultation at her shrine with some local supplicants.
October 5, Wednesday, Senshou
Tokujirou Yasumori says his goodbyes to his wife, who died overnight. The nurses reflect over how Dr. Ozaki's previously emotional demeanor has turned cold today. Towada phones to resign from working at the clinic. He says it's too scary in the village anymore, with the spreading disease. Retsuko remembers Nao's dead face from last night, and thinks that he doesn't know the half of it. Kiyomi tells the other nurses that another medical clinic opened in the former convenience store by the highway. Kyouko Ozaki takes pleasure in giving her mother-in-law the news about the competing clinic. Tatsumi has dropped by, and told her.
That evening, at the coffee shop, Yuuki wonders about there being an epidemic. Hirosawa, a local high-school teacher, has had a number of students phone the school to say that the family was suddenly moving away. Masaki has invited the doctor over to talk about it. The doctor arrives. They make note of how he looks like crap, which he should, having been up all night trying to save Setsuko. The doctor knows that they won't believe a story about the risen dead, the shiki, so he simply downplays their concerns.
October 6, Thursday, Tomobiki
The doctor goes to dig up Setsuko. He needs her to rise, as evidence to show the villagers. Seishin meets him, and tries to get the doctor to see the situation from the shiki point of view; that they are just trying to stay alive, the same as the humans. The doctor and Seishin discuss this. Afterwards, Seishin goes to the abandoned church to ponder his thoughts, and has Sunako Kirishiki drop in to see him there. He tells her some of the Cain and Abel story that he's writing. She is delighted. He then reveals that he knows who she is. She considers biting, but holds back.
