Motoko hates the national highway. She works at the restaurant on the highway, and so has to walk along it everyday to get there. Mostly, however, she is afraid of her children going onto the highway and being run down.
Then her father-in-law fell ill and died. After that was her husband.
Next, her daughter Shiori fell ill. In a panic, Motoko rushed the little girl to the Ozaki clinic, but found it closed. The doctor was tending to his dead wife that Saturday. Yoshie happens to come by, and suggests that Motoko go to the Ebuchi clinic on the highway. Motoko senses a trap, because of how she feels about the highway, but goes anyway. It's closed too, for it only opens after 6 pm; and so, that night Shiori died as well.
At last, Motoko's mother-in-law died, leaving just Motoko and her young son Shige. She takes him, and barracades herself in the bathroom with him, determined to protect him to the end.
