"At first, everyone is disgusted. Afraid to bear the sin of killing people. Afraid to receive punishment for replenishing themselves with the life of another. But, once you realize that you won’t be punished for killing people, you get used to the guilt pretty soon. The guilt of using humans for food. Aren’t humans the same?"
―Tohru Mutou

Personality[]

Tohru was a cheerful and outgoing young man with a happy-go-lucky and gentle personality. He was friendly and kind to anyone, whether they are locals, outsiders or strangers, a trait which has people, like Natsuno, open up to him, making him adored by his peers. He express great care for his family, and enjoys playing video games.

After his death and becoming a Shiki, he retains his gentle personality, yet loses his cheerful and positive exterior as he becomes torn by guilt and self-loathing. This is due to his thirst for the blood of his loved ones and neighbors; and to acting on said thirst for survival, despite his prior attachments. Though he tries to suppress his urges, his bloodlust inevitably consumes him, making him a reluctant killer. He falls into deeper guilt when and after he kills Natsuno, having chosen to do so after Tatsumi threatened to kill his family. This results in Tohru becoming depressed.

Ritsuko Kunihiro[]

"I wanna ask her to go on a drive with me this weekend, but I'm too nervous..."
―Tohru[src]

Though she is older than him, Tohru is in love with her and wants to date her. He's too nervous to ask her, though, and wants Natsuno to come with him. He is reluctant, but ends up agreeing.[2]

Appearance[]

Tohru has blonde hair with light brown eyes and fair skin color. He was always wearing a white T-shirt and brown, short pants and sandals. After his death and becoming a Shiki, his skin become pasty white with his eyes developing black sclerae and red irises. He wore mostly long-sleeved shirts with pants.

Plot[]

Tohru is Natsuno's closest friend in Sotoba. Tohru is a well-liked guy in the village of Sotoba and has many friends. He still lives at home together with his parents and his younger brother and sister (Tamotsu and Aoi). Tohru usually hangs out with Masao and Natsuno. He learns how to drive from Ritsuko Kunihiro, a nurse working at the Ozaki Clinic, who is older than him. He is in love with her and asks Natsuno to accompany him to ask her out on a date. Tohru is also fond of playing video games.

Tohru and Natsuno

Tohru met Natsuno when he walked passed him with a flat tire on his bicycle and offered to fix it for him. Natsuno refuses, but Tohru insists that it "will just take a second." Tohru asks for Natsuno's name, to which the latter refuses to tell before leaving. After getting another flat some days later, he visits Tohru again, who informs Natsuno that he learned his first name from his parents. Because Natsuno's last names are too confusing, he calls him by his first name which Natsuno does not care for. Ever since then, the two became friends.

After Megumi's death, Natsuno is unable to sleep well at home because he still has the feeling that she's watching him. Natsuno tends to sleep over at Tohru's place during this period.

Megumi attacks Tohru

One night, Tohru is thirsty and walks over to a vending machine but loses his 100-yen coin, which rolls under the machine. A stranger called Tatsumi, who just started living at the Kanemasa mansion offers to retrieve it using a backscratcher. Tohru is grateful and offers him to drop by sometime. Tatsumi asks if he can bring a friend and Tohru grants it happily. Some days later, Natsuno stays over again. In the middle of the night, Natsuno awakens and knows that Megumi is entering the house and climbing the stairs. When the door swings open and it's Tohru's sister, Aoi, Natsuno is relieved and believes he has hallucinated. However, Megumi speaks his name, showing her hidden under Tohru's bed and rises up while Natsuno watches the whole thing in shock, seeming motionless. Megumi says she dislikes Tohru for being closer to Natsuno than she ever was and bites his neck. Natsuno wakes up, soaked in sweat and immediately attends to Tohru, who seems unharmed, as there is no shown bite mark. Natsuno sighs in relief, thinking it was a dream.

A few days later, Tohru is absent from school. His sister claims that Tohru is addicted to a new video game and he is skipping class. When Natsuno decides to visit a few days later, he notices Toshio rushing to the house of the Mutou family. When Natsuno enters Tohru's room with Tohru's siblings, their father tells them that Tohru has died.

Death[]

Before attending Tohru's wake, Natsuno receives a late summer greeting card from Megumi which he tears up and throws outside his window. Natsuno is very quiet at the wake and asks Tohru's parents of he can see his face. He offers them his condolences. After the wake is over, Masao accuses Natsuno of having no feelings because he didn't cry and starts a fight. Masao is chased out of the house by Tohru's siblings.

Risen[]

A few days later, Natsuno, who has discovered the existence of vampires and is determined to fight them, is visited late at night by a mysterious person outside his window. Natsuno believes it's the vampire he encountered earlier when he was digging up Megumi's grave. However, a familiar sounding voice urges Natsuno to open his window. The voice is revealed to belong to Tohru, who has risen from his grave. Seeing Natsuno face-to-face, Tohru behaves cowardly and runs away. Natsuno chases him despite believing his actions are foolish. It turns out that Tatsumi has ordered Tohru to kill Natsuno. If he refused, Tatsumi would target Tohru's family instead. Tohru is very conflicted and Megumi offers to do the job for him, surprising him, and he asks her about how Tatsumi would react. Natsuno encounters both Tatsumi and Megumi on a road, who are closing in on him. But he is instead grabbed by Tohru from behind, who sinks his teeth into his neck.

In the manga, Tatsumi notices that Tohru did not drink any blood, punishing him by biting into his neck, suggesting that the Shiki are able to feed off one another, while starving the one who is bitten. Tatsumi acknowledges that Tohru holds on to his humanity, hence why he thinks starving him is the appropriate punishment.

October 27th[]

Seishin spots Tohru behind a tree. Tohru begs him to stay away from him. Seishin asks that he comes out to see him, but he refuses because he believes he cannot face him. He does not forgive himself for killing Natsuno, his best friend. He says that he did not wish for it, but Tatsumi's threat of attacking his family forced him to choose. Seishin attempts to comfort him because he did not have a choice, but Tohru says that he said they could run away together. He says that even now, he just attacked someone else. he doesn't want to kill, but he gets so hungry, and he'll die. He loses all control and attacks. Seishin apologizes and Tohru again asks him to leave him alone and forget their conversation. Seishin that no one can blame him for wanting to live as it's natural to fight for your life.

Tohru attacks Natsuno

When Tohru walks to Natsuno's house with the intention of feeding off of him, rather reluctant to knock on his window, Natsuno waits behind a bush. Natsuno reveals himself to Tohru, who slowly approaches him, only to jump back when Natsuno presents a wooden cross. Natsuno questions Tohru if crosses, garlic, and holy water affect the Shiki. Tohru utters Natsuno's name, which angers the latter. Natsuno starts running with Tohru tailing behind, asking if Shiki and humans can coexist, even saying that explaining themselves could motivate people to help them by sharing blood, but Tohru replies that if such a thing was possible, they would have never attacked people from the start. He explains to Natsuno that those who first rise are hesitant to attack people, but once they discover that they can kill without consequences, they adjust to it quickly. He continues by comparing the way Shiki feed to butchering a pig, saying, "You don't take off one bit at a time. It's like that." Natsuno turns around and lifts a stake that points at Tohru, stating that if a cross harms the Shiki, then so do stakes. Tohru pleads for him to not kill him, and Natsuno becomes furious, demanding him to act more like a vampire and less like his former human self. Seeing how conflicted Tohru is with himself, Natsuno offers Tohru his blood and wants them to escape Sotoba together. Tohru is too hungry and attacks Natsuno a second time. After the second attack, Natsuno's anaemia has gotten so bad that he has become bedridden. Tohru once again visits late at night, still conflicted with the whole ordeal. He unveils his remorse for attacking Natsuno and cries. Natsuno tells him that it is okay and welcomes his fate.

The next morning, Natsuno's father finds that Natsuno has died. After Natsuno's death, Tohru visits Natsuno's bedroom window every night leaving a flower. The Kirishikis discover this and Tohru is summoned to Sunako. He is terrified. If Yoshie called him he would be nervous and if it was Tatsumi he would most likely expect a beating, but being summoned by Sunako is the worst. Because she and Seishirou determine what the punishments should be, and Tatsumi does the punishing. Tohru remembers how he had to dispose a charred body Tatsumi left out in the sun for a crime that was never told. But it turns out she invited him for coffee much to his confusion and shares her life story and the difficulty of living as a Shiki, hoping to persuade him. Afterwards, Tohru decides to stop visiting Natsuno's house because of his desire to live. Suddenly, Natsuno reveals himself to him, unveiling his transformation as a Jinrou. Tohru begins to speak to him, but Natsuno stops him, telling him he can neither forgive him for the numerous attacks done that caused his transformation, nor forgive any member of the Shiki. He demands that Tohru reveal the initial plans Sunako has for the village, to which Tohru informs him of Sunako's intentions, as well as giving him other sorts of information. This is the last time Tohru sees Natsuno.

Tohru goes to Yamairi and discovers that Ritsuko has risen as a Shiki. She quickly figures out her basic functions (no breathing and hunger for blood) and Tohru has to monitor her. Because Ritsuko refuses to drink the blood of humans, they lock one of her colleagues in with her. Tohru cannot bare seeing Ritsuko suffer from the terrible hunger for human blood, and pleads her to drink some from her colleague. She refuses, saying that she does not want to hate herself for being a murderer like Tohru. He becomes furious and threatens to kill her colleague in front of her while probably jealous how she is able to hold on to her humanity better than he could. In the end, Ritsuko manages to convince Tohru to let her friend go. They decide to wait for death together.

November 6th[]

In the western mountain, Ritsuko begs Tohru to let Yasuyo go. He tells her that the villagers are killing the Shiki now, and if they find where they are, they will kill her regardless of her good intentions. Nevertheless, she still makes the request.

He brings the key and asks Yasuyo to not to tell anyone before letting her out. She agrees and escapes.

Ritsuko asks Tohru if she can sit beside him and he nods. He asks her if they could go on a drive together when he gets his license. He begins to tremble and she puts her hand on his and asks if he is afraid. He confirms this and puts his hand over hers, accepting their fates.

Yasuyo, instead of keeping her word, betrays them once she meets Toshio, telling the other villagers about the huts in Yamairi. When Natsuno later discovers Tohru and Ritsuko, he finds their staked corpses.

The End[]

Tohru and Ritsuko are discovered along with multiple Shiki and are staked. Upon seeing the body of his son, Tohru's father pleads to stop the genocide against the Shiki. But it fails, as the extermination of vampires proceeds.
